Colorado shooting: Three men died taking bullets for their girlfriends

Written by Michael Skolnik
Bullets. Bullets. More Bullets. And even more bullets. One shot. Two shot. Three shot. More shot. Screams of agony. Cries of babies. Yells of children. the dark night.
Out of breathe. We grab those around us.  We run to red lights of exit signs amid the darkness. We lay prone on the floor.  We pretend to be dead hoping someday we will breathe again. We jump on top of those we love hoping that if one more bullet comes our way, it hits us and not them. hoping. Truly hope that the bullet hits me. a strange thought. A thought that we never thought we would have thought.
We walk gently through life never imagining moments like these. There is no practice. No manual. No preparation. We rely purely on our instincts. Purely on the connection between our thoughts and the movements of our bodies. There is no time for contemplation.  No time for reason. No time for time itself. Only time for hope and prayers.

Deep prayers. Deep breaths. One breath. Two breath. Three breath. No breath. Three men. Three men jumped on top their girlfriends as bullets flew through Theater Nine at Century Cinemas in Aurora, Colorado on Friday morning. Amidst chaos. Amidst gunfire. Amidst tear gas. These three men thought of the women they loved and used their bodies to protect them. They threw them to the floor. Under the seats. They held them tight. They held onto their beautiful women as tight as they possibly could. Lying on top of their bodies in case a bullet came their way.

All three of their girlfriends survived this unfathomable early morning massacre. Jansen Young, Samantha Yowler and Amanda Lindgren made it out of the theater that night to breathe another breath. The breaths are hard to finish because the three men, the three boyfriends took bullets. They took bullets to save their ladies.
Jansen had the courage to recall those last moments, "There was kind of a break in between each gunshot. Every gunshot, I was like, ‘This is it . . . I’m done for.’ Jon gave me one good push against that concrete again and then . . . I didn’t really feel his arms against my back anymore but I knew he was still there.” When the gunshots went quiet, Jansen realized her boyfriend was shot. “I started shaking him and saying, ‘Jon, Jon, we have to go . . . it’s time for us to get out of here." But he didn't move. His breath was gone.

However, his heroic act will forever be remembered. And so will the bravery of the other two men.
These were the last moments of three heroes.
Jon Blunk, Matt McQuinn and Alex Teves.
Remember these names.

Man loses seven children to Jos flood

Abdulramid Useni, a resident of Gangere in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, who lost seven children to the flood, said he was yet to comprehend what happened to him.

“My world is finished. Where do I start from?” he asked our correspondent in an emotion laden voice.
Useni said they were sleeping when it happened.
He said, “All of us were sleeping. I, my wife and our 12 children were sleeping in the house when all of a sudden, there was this sudden surge of flood which took over our house. Before we could do anything, the house collapsed and the flood swept all of us away, including the house.
“I was able to survive because I clung to a pole. It was a matter of life and death as I was there until the flood subsided.”
Useni said he had found the bodies of six of his children while he was yet to locate one.
He said he and his wife and five other children survived to tell the story, adding that it was by the grace of God that his other children survived. Useni said he and the surviving members of his family were taking shelter in one of the displaced people’s camps in Rikkos.
Community Leader of Gangere, Gudu Usman-Ali, described the Sunday flood which killed no fewer than 38 people as a disaster. Mahmud told our correspondent in Jos that the flood was the worst the community had experienced in recent times.
He said the rain started at about 7.15pm and became heavier by 9.30pm when the floods overflowed the banks of River Rikkos.
Mahmud said, “We were in the mosque when the calamity started. The rain just started washing away houses and carrying people, some of whom were asleep.”
He said the floods overran three districts of Rikkos Tudun, Gangere and Angwan Rogo, adding that more than 20 people had been confirmed dead while scores of others were still missing. He called on the government to hasten rescue efforts and provide relief materials to displaced persons

AEPB casual workers hold Director, staff hostage

No fewer than 40 casual workers of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), on Monday morning, barricaded the entrance gate of the head office of the board located at the Central Business District, Abuja, to protest against non-payment of their wages.

The workers, who had gathered outside the gate at about 8a.m., refused to allow the Director of the board, Issa Shuaib, and the staff to move out of the office premises.

They sang various songs of protest to press home their demand.

One of the protesters, who stripped himself naked, said it was disheartening that AEPB treated them this way.
Another casual worker who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the board had not been paying their salaries for the last four months, despite the services they had been rendering.

"We were recruited as Enforcement Squad of the AEPB last year July and were trained at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Kubwa. The board gave us a black T. Shirt uniform and we were deployed to various parts of the FCT to arrest anyone who engages in street trading and other activities contrary to the law of the board," he explained.

"This year, we got the information that the director wanted to lay us off and in the bid to perfect that, he refused to pay us our pay. We have had series of meetings with him during which he promised to pay us, even if we have to go, but all to no avail."

He called on the FCT minister, Senator Bala Muhammed, to come to their rescue.
However, when contacted on telephone, the Head of Information of the AEPB, Joe Okairo, refused to comment on the issue. Instead, he asked the reporter to come inside the office.
