Man In Prison Over Alleged Rape Of 75-year-old Woman

                              

An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered the remand of a 45-year-old man, Lawrence Adedapo, in prison for alleged rape of a 75-year-old woman.

Chief Magistrate Simeon Ojo, who gave the order in his ruling, decried the alarming cases of rape in the state.

“It is high time the court made offenders to learn their lesson by keeping them in custody,” he said.

Ojo adjourned the case to Dec.16, for further hearing.

The Police Prosecutor, Mr David Erinma, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov.7 at Oke Erinmope Street, Ise-Ekiti in Ise-Orun Local Government Area.

Erinma told the court that the accused unlawfully had carnal knowledge the septuagenarian woman, which led to her severe bleeding.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 355 of the Criminal Code.

No plea was taken.

8 Killed As Truck Crashes Into Stationary Vehicles

No fewer than eight people were feared dead, yesterday, in Lagos when a truck veered off its lane and crashed into stationary vehicles at Oshodi.

Five vehicles were involved in the accident which occurred at the Oshodi ‘Isale’ Bus Stop on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

The stationary vehicles involved in the accident included three commercial buses and a Spots Utility Vehicle, SUV.

Protests As Tanker Crushes 2 Pupils To Death In Lagos

Protests along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos, following an accident that led to the death of two school pupils, yesterday, caused a traffic gridlock on the highway as protesters blocked the entire expressway.

The accident occurred directly opposite the Ikota Primary School premises, a public school, as the children crossed the expressway.

The pupils, numbering five, who came from the Mega Chicken side of the road, had crossed the first part of the expressway and were on the pavement in the middle of the road when a tanker from the Ajah end, knocked off a Spots Utility Van, SUV, that stopped for the children to cross over, an eyewitness told Vanguard.

NYSC Board Says Military Training For Corps Members Dangerous

The National Board of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has kicked against requests for the inclusion of a compulsory one year military training for corps members, saying it would pose grave danger to the country if at the end of the training they are not absorbed into any of the military services.

Chairman of the NYSC board, Alhaji Tijani Adekanbi, who made this known at a meeting with the acting governor of Niger State, Alhaji Ahmed Musa Ibeto, at the Government House in Minna, the state capital, said that members of the board of NYSC met recently on the issue and decided to suspend the matter.

No Missing N500bn SURE-P Funds – Okonjo-Iweala

The Minister of Finance, yesterday, denied Senate allegation that N500 billion was missing from the SURE-P funds.

A statement signed by the Special Adviser Media to the Coordinating Minister of Finance, Paul Nwabuikwu, said “contrary to some recent media reports, there is no missing N500 billion from SURE-P funds. The claim is completely false.

EFCC Grants Sule Lamido’s Sons Administrative Bail

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has granted administrative bail to Governor Sule Lamido’s two sons, Aminu and Mustapha, who were arrested last week in Kano on allegations of money laundering.

Aminu and Mustapha were reportedly arrested in connection with huge transactions involving the movement of Jigawa State funds into accounts of companies in which both of them and their father, the governor, are believed to have interest. The amount involved, according to the State Security Service, SSS, is about N10 billion.

Gov. Lamido has described the development as a political witch-hunt.

Eaglets To Get Plots Of Land In Abuja

FIFA U-17 Champions, Golden Eaglets of Nigeria will soon be proud owners of plots of lands at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, officials said.

“We have filled forms for plots of land in Abuja,” Eaglets coach Manu Garba said.

“All the players and officials filled these forms.”

The government had in the past rewarded title-winning teams with plots of land at the nation’s capital city, but apart from the monetary reward given to the Eaglets after winning the world cup, no one has heard anything about land rewards.

Billionaire businessman Jimoh Ibrahim arrested over N6b tax fraud

According to a report by Sahara Reporters, the Special Enforcement Unit of Federal Inland Revenue Service has arrested billionaire businessman, Jimoh Ibrahim, over a tax fraud that runs into N6.8b.

Sources within the unit told Saharareporters that Mr. Ibrahim was picked up today and is currently under detention at the offices of the agency.

According to one source, “We are investigating a case where Chief Ibrahim, defrauded the federal government to the tune of N6.8 billion. He is in our custody, we take intend to take a statement from the suspect under caution”, he added.

One of our sources said Mr. Mr. Ibrahim have been evading agents of the unit for some time but disclosed that they eventually caught up with him in his hotel room in NICON Luxury Hotel where he was arrested this afternoon in Abuja.

PDP Faction To FG: Account For Missing $5bn From Excess Crude Account

The breakaway faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, has challenged the federal government to account for the $5 billion, which is said to have disappeared from the nation’s Excess Crude Account (ECA).

Speaking at the second annual retreat of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) on November 15, in Sokoto, governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi, had said the ECA stood at $9 billion last January but had shrunk to only $4 billion as at today.

Two Female Undergraduates Stripped Naked For Robbing In Calabar

                         

Two female undergraduate robbery suspects and their male partner in crime were battered and stripped naked in Calabar, Friday afternoon, for attempting to rob a businesswoman of N1.5 million.

The three suspects operating in a Golf car were accosted by a taxi driver at about 4pm along the Murtala Muhammed Highway by the Cross River State new secretariat, while their driver and one other suspect escaped.

Anambra CP Confirms Arrest Of Idemili North LG Electoral Official

 

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Mr Bala Nasarawa, on Sunday confirmed the arrest of an electoral official involved in Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

Nasarawa told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka that the state Police Command was interrogating the official but declined to mention the presumed offence.

The commissioner was reacting to inquisitions about the statement credited to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega that the official who bungled the elections in Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area, had been handed over to the police.

Money Laundering: Banks Plan Nationwide Shutdown Over DSS Detention Of Officers

Indications emerged, weekend, that banks operating in the country may shut down operations nation wide in protest over the continued detention of key officers of about 18 banks by the Department of State Services over allegation of money laundering.

The arrest and detention of the officers was generating panic in banking quarters following over two weeks arrest and detention without charges brought against the concerned bankers.

Nigeria Does Not Have 100m Destitute – Presidency

About 100 million Nigerians live in destitution, the World Bank has said.

 The World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Marie-Francoise Marie-Nelly, said this at the bank’s Country Programme Portfolio Review in Enugu on Tuesday.

She said that the bank’s ongoing commitment to Nigeria stood at $5.34bn. According to the World Bank boss, the number of Nigerians living in destitution makes up 8.33 per cent of the total number of people living in destitution all over the world, which the bank plans to reduce drastically by 2030.

50 people die in Russian plane crash today

A passenger plane crashed at an airport in the Russian city of Kazan today, killing all 50 people on board, reports say.

The Boeing 737 had taken off from Moscow and was trying to land but exploded on impact at about 19:20 local time (15:20 GMT), officials said.

The Emergencies Ministry said there were 44 passengers and six crew members on the Tatarstan Airlines flight.

Spanish police arrest 25 Nigerians for sex trafficking

                               

Spanish police have arrested 25 people in a sex-trafficking ring that took women from Nigeria to work as prostitutes. The women, allegedly lured with the promise of good jobs in Europe, were first flown to Mexico or Brazil, travelling on false identity documents.

Police say from there, they are flown to Paris, and then smuggled into Spain to work in the sex trade. Five women who were victims of the sex ring were freed in the raids. Reports say police found one member of the gang performing an abortion on one of the five women.
