The Composite Group Air Force Base and other places in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Monday morning were subjected to a surprise attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorists.

The siege which started lasted for about five hours shook the town as sounds of sporadic gunshots and other Rocket Propelled Grenade Launchers rented the air with ensuing airstrikes in Maiduguri and Jere metropolis.
According to sources the attacks on the Air force Base and other targets, including the Maiduguri International Airport, left several persons dead as the suspected the terrorists, purportedly in their hundreds, planted explosives in targeted areas in the state capital.

Also affected by the attack are the newly constructed trailer park, along Damaturu- Maiduguri road, military check points, residential and public buildings, which according to a source led to high casualties among the terrorists and security agencies.
An eye witness, who resides in Gomari airport area, just few metres away from the Air force Base said, “I saw 5 military operational vehicles conveying dead bodies to the hospital at about 6am; the dead bodies were suspected to be security agents killed during the attack”.

It was also gathered that a counter-offensive using fighter jets resulted in the death of over a hundred suspected terrorists.
These figures, however, could not be independently verified as there is shutdown of telecommunications service in the Northeast state.
